Bart J. Bok
Bartholomeus "Bart" Jan Bok (born April 28, 1906 in Hoorn ; † August 5, 1983 in Tucson , Arizona) was an American astronomer born in the Netherlands .
Life
He is known for his work on the structure and evolution of the Milky Way and the study of globules .
Bok studied at the Universities of Leiden and Groningen (Ph. D. 1932). He spent his broad scientific career at Harvard University (1929–57), Australian National University (1957–66) and the University of Arizona (1966–74). In 1938 he became a US citizen. From 1957 to 1966 he was director of the Mount Stromlo Observatory in Australia and from 1966 to 1970 of the Steward Observatory in Arizona.
Bok was Vice President of the International Astronomical Union from 1970 to 1976 and President of the American Astronomical Society from 1972 to 1974 .
Bok was also a member of the Skeptics Society , a society promoting scientific and skeptical thinking.

The asteroid (1983) Bok is named after him and his wife Priscilla Fairfield Bok (1896–1975).
