Bartholomew Chessman

Bartholomäus Schachmann (born November 11, 1559 in Danzig ; † April 23, 1614 ibid) was a German explorer, art collector and Calvinist mayor of Danzig.
Bartholomäus Schachmann was a son of the Danzig lawyer Kaspar Schachmann (* April 8, 1520, † April 14, 1573). He studied in Krakow , Strasbourg , Heidelberg , Erfurt and Orléans . In 1592 he became a lawyer in Danzig, in 1594 a councilor and was one of the four mayors of his hometown from 1605 until his death.
In 1588/89 Schachmann toured Europe and the Ottoman Empire and then had an album published with 105 full-page drawings of the impressions of his journey. During his tenure as mayor, he commissioned Hans Vredeman de Vries (1527–1609) to make the large-format picture “Iustitia and Iniustitia” for the meeting room of the Gdańsk City Hall . The construction of the Neptune Fountain in 1633 can also be traced back to Schachmann's initiative.
Schachmann was buried in Gdańsk's Marienkirche .
His sister Anna was married to the mayor of Gdańsk Daniel Zierenberg (1547–1602) since 1571 .
