Bas van der Veer

Bas van der Veer (actually Elisabeth Arnolda van der Veer ; born June 23, 1887 in Schoonhoven ; † February 6, 1941 in The Hague ) was a Dutch painter, draftsman and illustrator. She also wrote texts for the children's books she illustrated.

life and work

Elisabeth Arnolda van der Veer was a daughter of the military doctor Rintje van der Veer and Charlotte Frederique Elisabeth Ekker. As a military doctor, father was stationed in several places around the country and brought the family to Schoonhoven (1885–1889), Kampen (1889–1891), Gouda (1891–1895), Vrijenban near Delft (1895–1903) and Amsterdam (from 1903) . During her stay in Vrijenban, Elisabeth received drawing lessons from the Delft painter Berend Adrianus Bongers (1866–1949). She continued her education from 1902 to 1906 at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague with Frits Jansen (1856–1928).

After graduating, she worked as a portrait painter and advertising artist in The Hague.

In 1913 she made her debut as an illustrator of children's books for the GB van Goor & Zonen publishing house. She signed her work “EA van der Veer”, then she signed her illustrations as “Bas van der Veer”. In 1915 she published two volumes of pictures and rhymes for Van Goor Verlag, for which she also wrote the texts herself. In 1918 she wrote and drew “A, that's Aafje”, an ABC picture book published by JM Meulenhoff- Verlag.

Van der Veer was a member of the Haagse Kunstkring (Hague Art Circle) and the Nederlandsche Vereeniging voor Ambachts- en Nijverheidskunst (Dutch Association for Crafts and Trades). Among other things, she exhibited with the Kunstkring and with De Vrouw 1813-1913.

From 1932 Van der Veer lived with her friend Jemmy van Hoboken in the house Den Eenhoorn in Veere . Together with a number of other female painters in Veere, including Claire Bonebakker , Lucie van Dam van Isselt , Ina Rahusen and Sárika Góth , they belonged to the Veerse Joffers, an artist group inspired by the Amsterdamse Joffers .
