The Geotop Basalt Park is a recultivated former basalt quarry near Bad Marienberg in the Westerwald . The open-air museum provides insights into the volcanic activity of the region around 25 million years ago. The park represents the history of basalt mining, which played an important economic role for the citizens in and around Bad Marienberg in the past centuries. The geological processes and previous mining methods are documented in the basalt park.

The basalt park is a branch of the Westerwald Landscape Museum and a geopoint of the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus Geopark . Above the basalt park is the Bad Marienberg wildlife park .

The different types and crystallization forms of basalt can be seen around the recultivated quarry. Characteristic for this are pentagonal or hexagonal pillars in various thicknesses and heights, which are often visible in the "mileage".

Bad Marienberg Basalt Park

A lake has formed in the lowest part of the former mining area. A nature trail leads along this , on which basalt of various shapes, for example columnar basalt, is exhibited. The open-air museum provides information on display boards about volcanic activity in the region 25 million years ago and their formation. It is also shown how basalt used to be mined and processed in open-cast mining . You can see old wagons and small locomotives that were used in basalt quarries in the Westerwald, and information is provided about the work of the tippers in the basalt quarries.
