Life
The son of an innkeeper did an apprenticeship in lithography in a music printing company after attending secondary school . From 1888 he studied at the Academy in Munich under Herterich and Ludwig von Löfftz and in Stuttgart. From 1895 he worked for the Deutsche Verlagsanstalt in Stuttgart. On behalf of the publisher, he was supposed to create a documentation about the eagle hunt and so came to Hindelang. In 1901 he bought a house in neighboring Bad Oberdorf . In the next few years he attended a painting school in Munich. The versatile artist worked as a painter , graphic artist , eraser and illustrator . His painting is inspired by expressionism . The love for his adopted home in the Ostrach Valley speaks from his landscapes . He has worked as an illustrator in numerous books. In addition, he worked as a "village painter" for brochures, posters and signs in Hindelang.
During the First World War he volunteered as a soldier and was awarded the Bavarian Medal for Bravery . After the war he relocated to Bad Oberdorf and lived there until his death. Although he had no musical training, he composed a number of songs with guitar accompaniment. He published his songs under the pseudonym "Bunter Vogel" and they were played on the radio in the 1920s.
In the mountain costume association "D'Ostrachtaler" founded in 1900 he was involved in the renewal of the Hindelang costume , but above all as a participant in the six-dance group. The flag of this association was donated by the Mahn family in 1905. From 1921 to 1922 he was the first chairman of the association. He is also one of the first skiers in the Ostrachtal.
