Basil van Rooyen (born April 19, 1939 in Johannesburg ) is a former South African racing driver .
Career
Basil van Rooyen showed his talent early on when he beat Sir John Whitmore , who was considered the champion on this vehicle, in a race in South Africa with an identical Lotus Cortina .
In the 1960s, van Rooyen was the top driver in touring car races in South Africa and Rhodesia . He also competed with Ford Mustangs and Alfa Romeos .
In 1968 and 1969 he also drove monoposto races. At the Grand Prix of South Africa he drove the old Cooper T79 of John Love . Van Rooyen had to give up prematurely with an overheated Climax engine. The following year he contested his home Grand Prix with the Lawson team's McLaren M7A . After a respectable ninth place in training, a brake defect stopped him.
In 1973, after several years in touring car racing, van Rooyen retired from racing. In 1975 he came back and drove for a few more seasons in Formula Atlantic .
