The Basilica of the Assumption of Mary ( Dutch Basiliek Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Hemelvaart ) is a Roman Catholic church in the district of Kortenbos of the municipality of Sint-Truiden , Belgium . The pilgrimage church of the Hasselt diocese is consecrated under the invocation of the Assumption of Our Lady and bears the title of a minor basilica . The church is looked after by the Premonstratensian Abbey of Averbode .

history

The baroque church was built to a design by the Minorite N. Ray. The nave was built between 1611 and 1648, and the transept and tower followed between 1655 and 1665. The facade with the entrance portal was added in the years 1698 to 1725, when the spire and the corner turrets were completed. The side portals were created in 1925. Pope Pius XI elevated the church to a minor basilica in 1936. In 1973 the church was placed under a preservation order and declared an architectural heritage in 2014. in the 1990s the church was renovated.

The basilica has a single nave as a cruciform church in brick. The main nave has four bays , the transept two and the choir only one yoke with a straight end. The west portal is accompanied by two side chapels. The bell tower and the sacristy are on the east side. The slender arched windows give the church a vertical character. The main altar is by Pieter Scheenaekers, the statue of Our Lady of Kortenbos is made of terracotta. Altarpieces show Our Lady with St. Norbert and St. Augustine and St. Norbert with the Mother of God , twelve other paintings also show Premonstratensian saints. The church shows eighteen votive pictures.
