The Basilica of Mary Queen of Hungary ( Hungarian Magyarok Nagyasszonya-bazilika ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Márianosztra , Pest County in northern Hungary . The listed former monastery church in the diocese of Vác is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and has the rank of a minor basilica .

history

Ludwig I had the newly founded Paulines build a church and a monastery in a rural area in 1352, in which his daughter Hedwig von Anjou was educated. The settlement that developed around the monastery was given the name of the monastery patroness Maria nostra (Latin "Our Mary", in Hungarian spelling Márianosztra ). During the fighting against the Turks, the complex became a ruin. After the reconstruction in 1712, the church was consecrated again in 1729 and received an image of the Virgin from the Pauline monastery in Jasna Góra in Czestochowa. A first organ was installed in 1774, the current gallery organ in 1904. In 1786 the Paulines had to leave the closed monastery, which was later used as a prison. The church was used by a newly created parish. In 1989 the Paulines returned to look after the sanctuary. In 2012 the church received from Pope Benedict XVI. awarded the rank of minor basilica.

architecture

The church and the monastery form an inner courtyard. The facade is symmetrical with two low side towers on a square base, with the entrance in the middle. The baroque nave and the lower Gothic choir are the same length. The choir closes with a polygonal apse in which the main altar with the image of Mary and wooden figures of saints stands. The ceiling of the choir has a ribbed vault . There are six side altars in the nave.
