history

The construction of the original parish church in Carey began in 1868 by the Italian-dominated immigrants as the first church in the village. This wooden church, preserved to this day in the sanctuary complex, was first consecrated as St. Edwards Church. With the growing veneration of Our Lady of Consolation, the church was renamed Maria Trost. A commissioned replica of the statue in Luxembourg Cathedral arrived in a large procession in 1875. The thirty-six centimeter high wooden statue depicts Mary and the Christ Child in ornate robes. The sanctuary is said to be healed to this day. The first bishop of Toledo, Joseph Schrembs, called the Franciscans into the direction of the sanctuary, who in addition to their provincial house also run a retreat house and cafeteria.

The increasing number of pilgrims made a larger church necessary. In 1924 the construction of the neo-Romanesque church made of red brick with 1000 seats, which was designed in the neo-Byzantine style, was consecrated. The three-aisled basilica , completed in 1929, has a cruciform floor plan, the nave has three bays , while the choir is connected to a single bay with a round apse with a semi-dome-shaped vault. The ceilings are designed as barrel vaults . On the main floor are the narthex , the sanctuary and the altar, which has retained its configuration from before the Second Vatican Council. A choir loft with the organ of the basilica rises above the narthex with a view of the sanctuary . In the basement there is a second sanctuary with confessionals. To the side in the basement there are showcases with various objects that were thrown off by the allegedly cured, including prostheses, sticks and crutches.

In the nearby Sanctuary Park are a number of Stations of the Cross , stretching for almost a kilometer along the park's winding edge road, enclosing an exterior altar under a large dome supported by four marble columns. The dome is decorated with gold and carries a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary at its apex, which can be seen from afar. The sanctuary park serves as the destination of the religious procession from the basilica on the feast of the Assumption .
