The Basilica of St. Anthony ( Turkish Sent Antuan Kilisesi ) is a Roman Catholic church in Istanbul .

location

The basilica is located on İstiklal Caddesi in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district . Its location in Constantinople used to belong to the European district of Pera .

history

Franciscans have been in Constantinople since 1221 and had various churches and seats during this time. In 1724 they built a new church in Pera and consecrated it to St. Anthony of Padua . When this church had to give way to a new tram in 1904 , the religious looked for a new building site nearby to build a church again. The foundation stone was laid on August 23, 1906. However, due to financial difficulties, construction had to be interrupted in 1907. Construction work could not be resumed until 1910. The church was built in a neo-Gothic style, while the crypt is in a Romanesque styleStyle kept. On February 15, 1912, the day of the translation of the relics of St. Anthony, the friars moved into their new monastery and the church was blessed. On November 16, 1913, the church was solemnly consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Vincenzo Sardi . In 1932 Pope Pius XI. the church to the rank of basilica . In the same year Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, who later became Pope John XXIII, preached for the first time . , in the church. In his later years as Apostolic Legate for Turkey, he was a regular guest in the church. Therefore a statue in front of the church commemorates him. In 1967 Pope Paul VI celebrated. in the basilica the first Holy Mass of a Pope on Turkish soil.

organ

In the basilica there is an organ that was built in 1947 by the Italian organ builder Mascioni (opus 623). The slider chest instrument has 32 stops on three manuals and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are electric.

Pastoral care is carried out by Italian Friars Minorites . Since many Catholics in Istanbul come from abroad, there are services in English , Italian , Polish , but also Turkish .
