Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy (Santa Rosa de Osos)
The Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy ( Spanish Basílica de Nuestra Señora de las Misericordias ) is a Catholic pilgrimage church in the municipality of Santa Rosa de Osos in the Colombian province of Antioquia . The minor basilica of the diocese of Santa Rosa de Osos is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the invocation of the Mother of Mercy.
history
After the Marian Congress in Colombia in 1919, a statue of the Virgin Mary was commissioned from the local artist Álvaro Carvajal in Santa Rosa de Osos, which today stands under the canopy created in 1934 in front of the church. After the chapel was consecrated, Bishop Miguel Ángel Builes made a vow to build a church, which began on September 8, 1950. The crypt was consecrated on September 8, 1954 . On September 8, 1962, Bishop Builes celebrated the first service in the unfinished church. In 1971 the church was completed and consecrated by Bishop Joaquín García Ordóñez . She received it in 1972 from Pope Paul VI. awarded the title of a minor basilica because of its special importance as a center of pilgrimage and religion. Bishop Jairo Jaramillo Monsalve gave the basilica the function of a parish church in 1996.
architecture
The building was constructed in the modern style using the Gothic pointed arch. It offers an area of 800 square meters on the plan of a Greek cross for a capacity of up to 3400 people. The aisles and transepts each form a pointed barrel vault that extends to the gables , the central part of which is raised to 26 meters to allow a ribbon of windows on each side between the outer and inner sections. The pointed crossing tower rises a total of 64 meters above the church and makes the basilica the tallest building in Santa Rosa de Osos and a symbol of the community.
