The Basilica of Our Lady of Trsat ( Croatian Crkva Gospe Trsatske ) is a Roman Catholic church in the Trsat district of Rijeka , Croatia . The church in the Archdiocese of Rijeka is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and has the title of a minor basilica .

history

At the end of the Crusader period, Nazareth was conquered by the Mameluks in 1263 and the Annunciation Basilica , which stood on the site of an early Christian shrine of the house where the Virgin Mary was born, was destroyed. Its ruin would remain a pilgrimage destination until the fall of Acre . With the following retreat, numerous relics were shipped to Europe. The stones of the Holy House are said to have reached the Illyrian Epirus in 1291 , according to legend according to Trsat in today's Croatia , and in 1294 to the opposite Adriatic coast in the Papal States and were rebuilt in the Basilica of the Holy House in Loreto .

In 1367 Pope Urban V sent the residents of Trsat, who were still mourning the loss, a picture of grace, which has since been venerated on the mountain as the "mother of grace". The Croatian princes of the Frankopan first built a chapel and in 1431 a church and a Franciscan monastery. The church was expanded repeatedly until 1824. It is considered the oldest church in Croatia and the country's oldest Marian shrine . In 1930 Pope Pius XI gave the pilgrimage church . awarded the rank of minor basilica . In 2003 the church was visited by Pope John Paul II , for whom the monument The Pilgrim of Trsat was erected in front of the church.

architecture

The church is located on a hill above the Adriatic Sea, 561 steps lead from the coast to the pilgrimage church. It was shaped in the various construction phases in the respective current styles of Gothic , Renaissance , Baroque and Biedermeier . The two-aisled church has a cross vault , but a very simple bell tower from 1824.

Furnishing

The splendid, baroque main altar made of colored marble dates from 1692. The sanctuary is separated from the church by an ornate iron grating from 1705; it was donated in 1705 by Bishop Martin Brajković of Zagreb. In 1714 the Venetian Cristoforo Tasca painted the large painting of the Annunciation above the triumphal arch . The miraculous image was crowned on September 8, 1715, the first coronation of an image of Mary outside of Italy. The organ was installed above the entrance.
