The basilica Virga Jesse ( Dutch Basiliek Virga Jesse ; Latin; "Reis Isais ", according to Isa 11.1  EU ) is a Roman Catholic church in Hasselt , capital of the Belgian province of Limburg . The church of the Diocese of Hasselt is consecrated as the Church of Our Lady of the Blessed Virgin Mary and has the title of a minor basilica .

history

The Brotherhood of Our Lady built the Clerkenkapel in 1334 to honor the Virgin Mary statue, Virga Jesse. From 1727 it was replaced by a church in the late Baroque and early Classicist style. The church was completed in 1740. François-Xavier de Mérode led on August 15, 1867 on behalf of Pope Pius IX. the canonical coronation of the Virgin Mary Virga Jesse.

In November 1944, the church and the adjacent houses were badly damaged by a V1 rocket . 16 people were killed. The Virga Jesse statue, which was in the middle of the church, was almost undamaged under the rubble. The reconstruction of the church was completed in 1951. The basilica has been a listed building since 1980. On May 6, 1998 Pope John Paul II elevated the Church of Our Lady to a basilica minor, which is why it was given its current name.

Furnishing

The most important part of the church furnishings is the Gothic oak statue of the Virga Jesse from the 14th century. From the church of the dissolved Cistercian abbey Herkenrode , some art treasures were transferred to the Church of Our Lady in 1802, such as the baroque altar by Jean Del Cour (1631–1707) and two tombs of abbesses, the marble tomb of the abbess Anna Catharina de Lamboy by Artus Quellinus the Younger (1625 –1700) and the grave of Abbess Barbara de Rivière d'Arschot by Laurent Delvaux (1682–1745). In the portal hangs a tapestry with the miracles attributed to the Virga Jesse, in the choir a polychrome painting from the 14th century of the Virga Jesse. On the occasion of the Virga Jesse celebrations, a church window was donated in 1982 and 1989 and a glass altar in 1996, and in 2003 a carillon with 16 bells. The organ was made around 1860 by the organ builder Arnold Clerinx for the Church of St. Elisabeth in Antwerp. It has been in the basilica since 1952. In 2003 it was restored.

procession

Since 1682, a magnificent procession with the figure of Mary has been held every seven years, around which a folk festival has developed. The event was added to the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Flanders in 2009 .
