Basic Bible

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The BasisBibel is a modern Bible translation for which the German Bible Society is responsible.

Basic idea

The BasisBibel is a translation of the Bible that reproduces the biblical texts in clear, concise language and is intended to make them easier to understand overall. With short sentences and clearly structured sections, it should be suitable for reading on digital devices (e.g. smartphone, tablet, PC). The special connection to the new media is also shown by the way additional information, for example on terms, as well as images and maps, is linked to the Bible text. Therefore, this Bible translation should be particularly suitable for people who are used to working with the Internet . The BasisBibel is advertised as the “world's first translation for new media”.

In the script of the Basic Bible there is only one unit of meaning in each line. The editors believe that this will make it easier for readers to focus on punctuation when understanding longer sentences and make it easier to see context. Especially weaker readers could benefit from this innovation.

Linguistically, the BasisBibel strikes a middle ground between philological and communicative Bible translation . The translation attaches great importance to proximity to the original text and the recognisability of theological key concepts. However, these are not explained in the text - as is usual with communicative translations - but in additional notes at the edge of the book page.

Development and publication history

The translation work began in 2003. In 2006 the translation of the Gospel of Mark was published as the first part . The four Gospels have been available since March 2008. By 2010, the remainder of the New Testament was translated and published in October 2010. Work on the Old Testament began in 2009 . The psalms were published in September 2012.

In the course of the translation work, interested parties were able to evaluate selected texts of the Bible translation as “test readers” and report any suggestions back to the translators.

The work on the translation of the Bible is supported by the Working Group of Evangelical Youth in Germany , the Working Group of Missionary Services , the Biblesebund e. V., the Christian Youth Village Association in Germany (CJD) and the youth association Decided for Christ .

The complete edition of the Basic Bible with the New and Old Testament is announced for January 21, 2021.

Digital and printed editions

The BasisBibel is designed as a Bible translation for various media. In addition to printed editions, the BasisBibel is also available as an app , software, eBook, online version and audio book . In the printed editions of the New Testament with Psalms, each page number is integrated into an Internet address that leads to the text and background information. In June 2011 an implementation of the New Testament of the BasisBibel appeared in the Bible software series bibelmultimedial. Apps for iPhone or iPad and Android followed. The text of the BasisBibel is now available in the Die-Bibel.de app of the German Bible Society and in the KonApp, the app for confirmation work.

Words of Life

As a selection Bible for soldiers, texts from the Old Testament by Sigurd Rink , Hans-Jürgen Abromeit and Alexander Fischer were presented to the public for the first time in 2015 at the Low German Bible Center in Barth . The edition is based on 40 Bible texts from the BasisBibel, which have been published especially for the Protestant military pastoral care in Germany . The selection also appeared in bookshops as “BasisBibel.Auslese”.
