former St. Jürgen Hospital

The Barth Bible Center , formerly the Low German Bible Center St. Jürgen , was set up in the former hospital church of the St. Jürgen Hospital in Barth ( Vorpommern-Rügen district ) and shows, among other things, the Barther Bible in Middle Low German, which was printed in the city in 1588 . The Biblical Center sees itself as an educational institution, especially for the school sector, with contributions to the subjects of history, religion and philosophy, music and art, social studies, local history and specialist studies, literature and Low German.

history

The brick church of St. Jürgen, preserved only with the choir , was built in 1380 and used as a hospital church in a reception and care settlement for lepers . The nave was probably destroyed later in a fire or by war, instead a half-timbered hospital building was added to the remaining choir , whereby existing masonry was included. Indications of this are the remains of the former church walls in the outer masonry. In old city views, the church is shown in the middle of a hut settlement with a roof turret.

The hospital building has been converted and used for residential purposes since the 19th century. The purpose of this conversion was to use it as a retirement home that could be bought with a cash payment. Later used as a normal house, it fell into disrepair due to lack of maintenance since the 1960s, and in 1988 the last occupant moved out. The closed choir room was still used for church services until then.

After 1990 efforts were made to save the building from final destruction, the windows and doors were nailed shut. In 1998, extensive restoration work began on converting it into the Low German Bible Center, which was opened on Reformation Day 2001. During these restorations, the wall paintings of St. Christopher and St. Anthony were exposed in the chapel .

Since 2001 the exhibition of the Low German Bible Center St. Jürgen has been housed in the hospital building with the chapel, next to it a new functional building with guest rooms and training rooms for conferences, seminars, education and events was built.

In 2009 the Biblical Center's collection was enriched with a copy of the Barther Bible, the Lübeck Bible from 1533 .

The Bible Center also commemorates the local reformer Johannes Block , who worked as a pastor in Barth until 1545 and whose private library has been preserved to this day.

The Biblical Center was initially an institution of the Evangelical Main Biblical Society and of Cansteinschen Biblical Society Berlin (EHBG) until its dissolution at the end of 2004. Then the Pomeranian Biblical Society was founded as a sponsoring association. In 2007, the Low German Biblical Center Foundation was established to ensure long-term work , a church foundation with legal capacity under civil law. At the beginning of 2014, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany took over the sponsorship of the Bible Center with the now (since 2013) Mecklenburg and Pomeranian Biblical Society as a sponsoring association . In the period that followed, the name “Barth Bible Center” was introduced instead of the “Low German Bible Center St. Jürgen”.

Bible garden

At the same time as the exhibition about the Barther Bibeldrucks was set up in the hospital building , a Bible garden was opened in 2001 , which has been expanded over the years.

Teaching and monastery garden

As an extension of the choir room of the St. Jürgen Chapel, a teaching garden was created during the restoration of the facility in 2001, based on the model of old monastery gardens. This is divided into four sections, each of which is thematically arranged.

Guided tours by garden specialists and theologians are offered regularly and botanical courses are held in the garden. The Barther Bible Garden team was one of the initiators of the nationwide Bible Garden Network, which meets annually for specialist conferences.

rose Garden

After many years of planning, an expansion of the Bible Garden was opened in 2017 , the year of the Reformation anniversary. Around 40 different types of roses with names related to the Bible, Christianity and church history have been put together in a rose park for the first time . In the south, a remise with a sun terrace forms the end of the rose garden and is used for events.
