The printing of the Barther Bible is characterized by a very clean and complex typography. Almost 700 font types and ten different typesets were used, along with various forms of jewelry. 90 metal clichés made from woodcuts give this book a special character. A large part of the original wooden sticks are now in the Museum for the Principality of Lüneburg in Lüneburg.

Origin and Distribution

The Duke Bogislaw XIII residing in Barth . commissioned the new printing of the Bible in an edition of about 500 copies. The Bugenhagen Bible or Lübeck Bible from 1533 , printed by Ludwig Dietz using woodcuts by Erhart Altdorfers , was used as a template, which had been translated into Low German with the help of Johannes Bugenhagen and appeared shortly before the first High German edition of the Luther Bible. The Bibles were used as an altar Bible in Pomerania. Middle Low German was the lingua franca of the Hanseatic League in the late Middle Ages and thus in the entire economic area around the Baltic Sea.

Preserved copies

Around 70 copies have been preserved worldwide today, one of which is owned by the Kulturhistorisches Museum in Stralsund , another by the Barther Vineta Museum, three copies in the Rostock University Library , one of which is owned by Duke Bogislaw XIII. The Low German Bible Center St. Jürgen in Barth cherishes the memory of the important edition of the Bible in Low German.
