Main Evangelical Bible Society

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Evangelical Main Bible Society , also Evangelical Main Bible Society in Berlin and Altenburg , Evangelical Main Bible Society and von Cansteinsche Bibelanstalt (EHBG) was a German Bible Society and one of three ecclesiastical publishers in the GDR .

history

The Evangelical Main Bible Society went back to the Prussian Bible Society founded on November 23, 1805, from which the Prussian Main Bible Society emerged on August 2, 1814 in Berlin , which received sovereign recognition by cabinet order of September 13, 1814. Following the example of the British and Foreign Bible Society in London , its mission was to facilitate the distribution of the Bible .

In 1938 it took over the oldest German Bible Society, founded by Cansteinsche Bibelanstalt in Halle an der Saale in 1720 , from the Francke Foundations and now traded as the Prussian Main Bible Society and Von-Cansteinsche Bibelanstalt . After the Second World War it was re-established in 1947, but received no license as the Prussian Society. Together with the Altenburg Bible Institute, which was re-approved immediately after the end of the war, the Evangelical Main Biblical Society of Berlin and Altenburg (EHBG) was formed, which received a printing license in 1953 and became a member of the German Booksellers Association . The first Bible editions were printed in the GDR as early as 1950, initially as licensed editions by the Evangelical Publishing House . In addition to the Evangelical Publishing House and the Catholic St. Benno Publishing House , the Biblical Society was now one of only three ecclesiastical publishers in the GDR. In addition to Bible editions, parts of the Bible and concordances , lectionaries , agendas and hymn and prayer books were also published here. 20 to 25 titles appeared per year.

The distribution took place through regional branch associations, church parishes and the book trade. The publishing house was managed by a 25-strong directorate in which all regional churches in the GDR were represented. The headquarters of the Bible Society, where 30 employees worked, was at Krautstrasse 52 in Berlin-Friedrichshain .

After the fall of the Wall and German reunification , the Bible Society was reconstituted as an association under the old law . The Altenburg Bible Institute ceased operations at the beginning of 1991. On September 7, 1993 the association received a new statute and the name Evangelische Haupt -ibelgesellschaft und von Cansteinsche Bibelanstalt in the area of the Evangelical Church of the Union . The publishing house, which still had 10 employees, moved to Ziegelstrasse 30 in Berlin-Mitte . During this time, the Biblical Society was the publisher of the Evangelical Hymnbook for the East German regional churches and the founder of the Low German Bible Center St. Jürgen in Barth and a number of other institutions such as the Canstein Center in Halle and the Bibelturm in Wörlitzer Park .

Due to unrecoverable liquidity problems , bankruptcy threatened in 2004 . Short-term liquidation assistance from EKU was initially able to prevent the impending insolvency. On the recommendation of the Presidium and the Board of Directors, the General Assembly decided with the majority required by the statutes to dissolve the EHBG with effect from December 31, 2004. The last president since 1997 was Helge Klassohn . The facilities were transferred to other sponsors. A deposit agreement with the Brandenburg Cathedral Foundation for the company's old holdings of historical books was transferred to the EKU Foundation.

The von Cansteinsche Bibelanstalt eV in Berlin eV was newly founded as an association in 2005.
