The myelin basic protein ( MBP , engl. Myelin basic protein ) is a protein which has a great importance for the myelin sheath of nerve cells has. In the protein component of myelin it makes up about 40 percent. In research on the development of multiple sclerosis (MS), the animal model " experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis " (EAE), it is a frequently used autoantigen alongside myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) . Dirucotid (MBP8298), a synthetic fragment of the MBP consisting of the 17 amino acids in positions 82 to 98 of the MBP, was able to delay the progression of the disease in various patients with progressive MS.
BHT-3009 and atorvastatin are both believed to reduce the body's immune response to MBP.
A detection of MBP in the cerebrospinal fluid of more than 9 ng / ml suggests acute myelin damage; Values between 4 and 8 ng / ml indicate chronic damage or a recovery phase after acute damage. Acute damage applies here
