The myelin basic protein ( MBP , engl. Myelin basic protein ) is a protein which has a great importance for the myelin sheath of nerve cells has. In the protein component of myelin it makes up about 40 percent. In research on the development of multiple sclerosis (MS), the animal model " experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis " (EAE), it is a frequently used autoantigen alongside myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) . The gene that codes for MBP is found on chromosome 18 in humans in the region affected by trisomy 18 . After it was first isolated from the myelin sheath, its amino acid composition could be determined in 1979.

Dirucotid (MBP8298), a synthetic fragment of the MBP consisting of the 17 amino acids in positions 82 to 98 of the MBP, was able to delay the progression of the disease in various patients with progressive MS.

BHT-3009 and atorvastatin are both believed to reduce the body's immune response to MBP.

A detection of MBP in the cerebrospinal fluid of more than 9 ng / ml suggests acute myelin damage; Values between 4 and 8 ng / ml indicate chronic damage or a recovery phase after acute damage. Acute damage applies here

With the knowledge that prions not only cause bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle , but can also pose a threat to humans, the need arose to detect cattle brain in meat products. This is possible with an indirect ELISA , which is based on the detection of MBP.
