Basti ( Hindi : बस्ती , Urdu : بستى Bastī [ ˈbʌsti ]) is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh with around 115,000 inhabitants (2011 census).
It is located in the northeast of Uttar Pradesh, 65 kilometers west of Gorakhpur and 75 kilometers east of Faizabad . Basti is the administrative seat of the Basti District and the Basti Division .
Basti became the seat of a local Raja in the 17th century , but has never been more important. After the city came under British rule in 1801 , it became the district capital in 1865.
The national road NH 28 runs through Basti from Lucknow to Barauni . Basti is connected to the railway network via the railway line from Lucknow to Gorakhpur.
