The moths reach a wingspan of 9 to 13 millimeters. The head is yellow, this color is mixed with gray in the middle of the head. The antennae are yellowish brown and ringed white at the tip, which is more pronounced in females than in males. The thorax shines yellow, this yellow is also strongly mixed with gray-brown scales . The hind wings shine gray.

Similar species

B. pinicolella is slightly smaller than Batrachedra parvulipunctella , has yellow fore wings and a gray-brown line in the fringes of the costal margin that extends to the wing tip.

distribution

The species is also found in Europe and mainly inhabits mountain regions in the south. In the east, the distribution area extends over the Caucasus and southern Siberia to the Russian Far East .

biology

The caterpillars feed on fir ( Abies ), spruce ( Picea ) and pine species ( Pinus ). The kind is univoltin . The caterpillars hatch in spring and begin to mine at the base of the needle. Later they live in the twigs lying on the twigs, which are covered with grains of excrement on the ground. The brown caterpillars bore their way into the needles in the middle of this rope tube. Before pupating, the caterpillars make a solid, spindle-shaped cocoon near the feeding place. This is attached to a branch and some needles. The cocoon itself is covered with small bark scales and dung crumbs and thus well camouflaged. The pupa is slender and has long fore wing sheaths. At the end of the abdomen there is a group of curved spines. The caterpillars live from September to May. The moths fly from mid-June to August, according to another source from June to September. In the north of the Caucasus, the species pests ornamental conifers.
