Battista "Pinin" Farina (born November 2, 1893 in Turin ; † April 4, 1966 ) was an Italian coachbuilder who developed into an internationally renowned car designer. The Pininfarina company he founded was one of the most successful companies in the industry in the second half of the 20th century.

biography

Battista Farina grew up in Turin. His older brother was Giovanni Farina , who founded the bodywork company Stabilimenti Farina in Turin in 1906 . Battista Farina was already working as a draftsman and stylist for his brother's company before the First World War . Together with the designer Felice Mario Boano , he made Stabilimenti Farina into the most successful Italian body manufacturer in the 1920s . In 1930 Battista Farina and Felice Mario Boano left Stabilimenti Farina, which in the following years was headed by Pietro Frua , among others . Battista Farina founded the Carrozzeria Pinin Farina in 1930, the predecessor of what is now Pininfarina SpA, the company designed numerous Alfa Romeo , Ferrari , Fiat , Jaguar , Lancia , Maserati and Peugeot vehicles .

In 1961, at the suggestion of the Minister of Justice, the Italian President gave Farina permission to change his surname to Pininfarina .

His descendants Sergio (1926–2012) and Andrea (1957–2008), who took over the name extension, also joined the company.

Giuseppe Farina , the first Formula 1 world champion , was the son of his brother Giovanni Farina.
