BattleTech (book series)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The BattleTech book series takes place in the BattleTech universe, a science fiction universe that originally became known through a tabletop game, then other games as well. The plot of the series is based on the idea that humanity spreads in the cosmos and colonizes star systems. The time in which the novels are set begins in the 31st century.

background

See main article: BattleTech Story

The action takes place in an interstellar feudal society in the 31st century, with the populated part of space known as the Inner Sphere . At the edge of this core zone around the so-called Sol system is the "outer periphery", the solar systems there are not assigned to any of the five large houses and their populated planets are in most cases under their own management. During the so-called Golden Age , the Inner Sphere was united in the Star League until it went under in the middle of the 28th century. Centuries of conflict ensued between the remaining large houses (Steiner, Davion, Marik, Kurita and Liao) until a new threat emerged in the middle of the 31st century: the clans , descendants of those under command shortly after the collapse of the Star League from General Alexandr Kerensky to the unexplored areas of interstellar space, the legendary Star League army that had returned to recapture Terra, the mother world of humanity.

Massive human-controlled fighting machines have been used in these wars since the 25th century. The most powerful of these monsters, also known as mechs, are 14 meters high and weigh up to 100 tons (in the case of the successor to the original game system, Mechwarrior - Dark Age , which is now known as Classic BattleTech , the mechs can weigh up to 150 tons). They are controlled by so-called “Mech Warriors”, who are not unlike today's jet fighter pilots. One of the main pillars of the book series is the authors' love for the technical details of battlemechs and other technology. Sometimes "ordinary" things, such as firing a weapon or starting a battlemech, are described in comparatively long text passages and embellished accordingly. But the elaboration of the characters, especially those who appear again and again in the course of the entire book series, is conscientious and worked out with great depth. A stark contrast to the passages that deal with war, annihilation and death are the passages that deal with the course of political action.

Title of the MechWarrior book series

The storylines of the MechWarrior novels take place in the same timeframe as the Battletech franchise books. These books should not with the MechWarrior: Dark Age - novels are confused.

The books in the Mechwarrior series were published in Germany by Phoenix Verlag, which was part of Battletech's German licensee, FanPro Germany. However, the first five books were first distributed by Heyne-Verlag and classified in the Classic Battletech series. Only the latest work was no longer integrated.

The motivation to publish the books was to appeal especially to the players of the MechWarrior computer games. The logo on the books corresponded to the lettering on the computer games of the same name and the actions of the books focused less on interstellar events and many well-known characters, but rather clearly outlined on a young, unknown character (a Mech Warrior) who was involved in global actions.

These were published by the in-house publisher FanPro Germany and are currently only available in German. Title of the book series Mechwarrior: Dark Age

The story of the Inner Sphere continues in Mechwarrior: Dark Age , but there is a time gap of about 80 years between the last BattleTech novel Finale and the first Dark Age novel Ghost War. During this period, another large state emerged, the Republic of the Sphere , which is composed of territories of the five successor states near Terran.

The Wizkids Dark Age novels are published in the English-language original. Your German translations are distributed by Heyne-Verlag, which also had the original BattleTech novels in its range. Heyne has since discontinued the series, probably due to the low sales figures. FanPro would have liked to continue the series, but no agreement was reached with the licensee. The series of novels has been continued in Germany since October 2011 by Ulisses Spiele.
