The construction of 59 , also Zeiss building 59 called, is a high-rise on the former premises of Carl Zeiss AG in the center of Jena .

The building has 16 storeys at a height of 67 meters and was built between 1959 and 1965 as a research high-rise for VEB Carl Zeiss Jena based on designs by architects Hans Schlag and Johannes Schreiter . Use by Zeiss ended in 1989.

It was extensively redesigned in 1992/93 by the architects Rödl & Braschel and received its current appearance with a facade cutout , a glass corner tower and a curved roof crown. Since then, the research high-rise has been called Bau 59 or B 59.

The entrance area was designed in 1993 by Ben Willikens .

In 2011 Christian Graf von Wedel took over the building.

History of high-rise construction in Jena

In 1915, Building 15 in Jena, Germany's first high-rise. The building designed by Friedrich Pützer was used by Zeiss as a production facility. In 1936 the architects Hans Hertlein and Georg Steinmetz built a new administration building for Zeisswerke, the so-called Bau 36 . In 1945 Allied bombing raids destroyed large parts of Jena city center.

After the end of the Second World War, the city council decided on the “Development Plan for the University City of Jena”. In 1959, construction of the research tower began. On April 30, 1970, the foundation stone was laid in the immediate vicinity for the 26-storey research tower designed by Hermann Henselmann . It was inaugurated on October 2, 1972. From 1999 to 2001 the tower was renovated. Then Intershop Communications AG used it . In November 2004 the Intershop Tower was renamed Jentower . At 159 meters, the tower is the tallest building in East Germany.
