Baudouin of Belgium
Baudouin Léopold Philippe Marie Charles Antoine Joseph Louis of Belgium (born June 3, 1869 in Brussels , Belgium ; † January 23, 1891 there ) was a prince of Belgium and, following the death of Crown Prince Leopold , was second in the Belgian line of succession after his father Job.
Life
Baudouin was the eldest child of Prince Philip of Belgium , Count of Flanders (1837-1905) from his marriage to Princess Marie (1845-1912), daughter of Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen .
After the death of King Leopold II's only son, his father became heir to the throne in 1869, and Baudouin became the second in line to the Belgian throne when he was born. In order to underline the claim to the throne and to connect the two branches of the family, a marriage between Baudouin and the youngest daughter of King Leopold II Clémentine was planned. But Baudouin felt no feelings for the princess and Baudouin's mother also resisted the connection.
Baudouin contracted a cold at the bedside of his sister Henriette , whom he was very close to, and died of pneumonia at the age of 21 in the royal palace . There was speculation that the sudden death had other causes, such as the result of a duel. However, this has never been confirmed. He was buried on January 29, 1891 in the Liebfrauenkirche in Laeken . The succession fell to his younger brother, who ascended the Belgian throne in 1909 as Albert I.
In memory of Baudouin, the city of Moba , founded in 1893 and located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the east on Lake Tanganyika , was named Baudouinville / Boudewijnstad by the Belgian colonial powers .
