Beat Happening is an American rock band formed in Olympia , Washington , in 1982 . Beat Happening was one of the first American representatives of the DIY movement in independent music and had a great influence on subsequent musicians, including Kurt Cobain .

history

The band members got to know each other during college and began recording their first recordings in 1983, which they released on cassettes. The band cultivated a consciously minimalist style, rejecting commercial rock music, and recorded their records with the simplest of means. The band members took turns with guitar, drums and vocals. In 1985 the first album was released, which was produced by Greg Sage, the singer of the punk band Wipers . The band first became internationally known with the second LP Jamboree (1988), which, like the third LP Black Candy (1989), was distributed by the English independent label Rough Trade . The albums Dreamy (1991) and You Turn Me On (1992) were released in collaboration with the Sub Pop label , on which the first Nirvana album Bleach was released in 1989 .

Calvin Johnson founded the independent label K Records in 1982, which releases independent bands from all over the world and on which all beat happening albums were released. As he concentrated more and more on his activities as a label boss and musical side projects in the early 1990s, the band activities were suspended for a few years without Beat Happening officially disbanding. In 2000 the band released the single Angel Gone .

In 2015, the three band members put together the best-of album Look Around for Domino Records , which contains songs from the period 1984 to 2000.
