Beatrix of Vermandois

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Beatrix († probably before 907) was a wife of the powerful West Franconian comes and marchio Robert († 923) from the Robertin family , who was raised to King of West Franconia in 922.

Beatrix's name emerges from a document from Beatrix's son, the West Franconian dux Francorum Hugo Magnus , issued on March 26, 931. The mother of the dux is mentioned here as domnæ Beatricis , at the same time this is her only contemporary mention.

origin

The family origin of Beatrix, one of the ancestors of the Capetian dynasty , is controversial. In general, she is mentioned in the specialist literature as the daughter of Count Heribert I of Vermandois , which means she would also belong to the Frankish ruling dynasty of the Carolingians . However, this assumption is based on an entry in the 11th century Historia Francorum Senonensis , in which the wife of King Robert I and mother of Hugo Magnus is named as Heribert II's sister . Several subsequent chroniclers, such as Ordericus Vitalis and Robert von Torigni , have apparently obtained their information regarding the genealogical relationships to the early Capetians from this chronicle from Sens , whereby the affiliation of Beatrix to the count house of Vermandois was consolidated in the general historical canon.

It should be noted, however, that the reliability of the Historia Francorum Senonensis with regard to genealogical information has been refuted several times. More recent authors, above all Flodoard von Reims , are silent about the family background of the mother of the dux Hugo Magnus. The only relevant relationship between the dux and Count Heribert II of Vermandois that appears to be relevant is the marriage of the count with a sister of the dux whose name is unknown .

When the Capetian dynasty began to propagate their dynastic descent from the Carolingians in the 13th century, they relied on King Philip II's wife , Isabella of Hainaut († 1190), as a link. Beatrix as the supposed descendant of Charlemagne who was closer in time played no role in this.

death

The year Beatrix died cannot be precisely determined either. The document from the year 931 suggests that she was still alive at the time of issuance, although she is mentioned here without any royal title, even though her husband was made King of West Franconia in 922. The coronation of Emma , a daughter of King Robert I and the wife of King Rudolf , in the year 923, on the other hand, was worth mentioning by contemporary chroniclers.

Beatrix probably died before Robert I's accession to the throne in 922, perhaps before 907. In a document from King Charles III. of the simple one of May 21, 907 the venerandi comitis Rotberti (later King Robert I) is called with an Adelæ comitissæ . Since the dux Hugo Magnus was already of legal age when his father died in 923, it can be assumed that the said Adela was the second wife of his father and mother of his daughters. His own mother, Beatrix, must have died before 907 and consequently never attained royal dignity.
