Beaucarnea goldmanii is a species of the genus Beaucarnea in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). An English common name is "Goldman's Pony Tail".

description

Beaucarnea goldmanii grows tree-shaped with heights of 4 to 8 m. It forms a thickened caudex, which merges into a slender trunk. The irregularly arranged branches with the variable falling linear, bluish to green leaves are 40 to 80 cm long and up to 15 mm wide.

The elongated, panicle-like inflorescence , which narrows towards the tip and begins above the leaves, becomes 80 to 120 cm high with 20 to 30 cm wide, irregularly arranged branches. The flowers are yellow in color.

The elliptical capsule fruits contain a seed and are up to 15 mm long and in diameter. The triangular seeds are up to 5 mm in diameter.

Systematics and distribution

Beaucarnea goldmanii is found in Mexico ( Chiapas ) and Guatemala in xerophyte regions in dense, tropical deciduous forests.

The first description was in 1909 by Joseph Nelson Rose .

Beaucarnea goldmanii is a member of the Beaucarnea section . It grows in dry, tropical forests and, along with Beaucarnea guatemalensis, is the southernmost species of the genus in America. The irregularly branched, slender trees with the caudex thickened at the base are characteristic. The variable, bluish to green falling leaves with the smooth leaf surfaces and the inflorescence beginning above the leaves are typical. It is closely related to Beaucarnea guatemalensis , which, however, has a shorter, egg-shaped inflorescence.

Beaucarnea goldmannii is hardly known.
