Beaucarnea hiriartiae is a species of the genus Beaucarnea in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). An English common name is "Pony Tail Palm".
description
Beaucarnea hiriartiae grows shrubby to tree-like with heights of 5 to 8 m. It forms a thickened, oval caudex, which merges into a slender trunk. The irregularly arranged sparse ramifications with the variable, falling linear green leaves that are finely toothed on the leaf margins are 70 to 90 cm long and 10 to 15 mm wide.
The egg-shaped, paniculate inflorescence is 70 to 100 cm high with 20 to 30 cm wide, irregularly arranged branches. The flowers are white to yellow.
The egg-shaped to elongated capsule fruits contain a seed and are 8 to 11 mm long and in diameter. The triangular seeds are 3.5 mm long and 3 mm wide.
Systematics and distribution
Beaucarnea hiriartiae is distributed in Mexico in the state of Guerrero in xerophyte regions in tropical deciduous forests at an altitude of 250 to 700 m.
The first description was in 1992 by Luis Hernández Sandoval .
Beaucarnea hiriartiae is a member of the Pappilatae section . It grows in dry, tropical forests. The irregularly branched, slender trees with the caudex thickened at the base are characteristic. The variable, green, falling leaves with the finely toothed leaf edges are typical. It is closely related to Beaucarnea stricta , which, however, has shorter and stiff leaves.
Beaucarnea hiriartiae is hardly known.
