Beckwourth is a census-designated place in Plumas County , Northern California.
The place is in the Sierra Valley, a high valley in the northern Sierra Nevada on California State Route 70 (CA-70), about ten kilometers east of Portola . South of the village, the middle arm of the Feather River and the Feather River Route of the Western Pacific Railroad , which goes back to a narrow-gauge line from the 1880s, run in the valley .
The place developed out of the ranch of James P. Beckwourth , a fur hunter and dealer in the pioneering days of the Wild West , who discovered the Beckwourth Pass east of the place in 1850 and created the Beckwourth Trail , a road across the Sierra Nevada for settlers and Prospectors. Beckwourth built a small ranch with a hotel and trading post for the travelers on his road in 1852 in what he calls the Pleasant Valley today. He lived there until the end of 1858. The last of the three log houses built by him has been preserved southwest of today's town and is a listed building . A small museum about Beckwourth's life has been set up there.
Beckwourth today consists of the small town center on Highway CA-70 and two new residential areas in the hills northwest of it.
