The Feather River , with a length of 129 kilometers, one of the main tributaries of the Sacramento River in northern California . It drains parts of the northern Sierra Nevada and a small part of California's long valley . The river has a rich history as the site of the 19th century gold rush . Large parts of central and southern California are supplied with water from the river. About his Spanish name form Río de las plumas , he is the namesake of the Plumas County , which its source rivers cross.
description
The river has its source in three separate headwaters in the Sierra Nevada, which merge in the arms of the Oroville Reservoir in the hills eight kilometers northeast of Oroville in eastern Butte County . The combined river flows south through the Sacramento Valley , east of the Sutter Buttes , through Oroville and Yuba City - Marysville, and joins the Sacramento River about 30 kilometers north-northwest of Sacramento .
It takes up the Yuba River in Yuba City and the Bear River 25 kilometers south of Yuba City.
The Feather River Route
The Western Pacific Railroad built a railroad through the Feather River Canyon . This route leads over the Beckwourth Pass , the lowest mountain pass over the Sierra Nevada . The Western Pacific California Zephyr trains used this route. The railway company had a feather in its logo.
