history
Bedford Heights shared the history of Bedford Township until the 1950s . Bedford Township was surveyed in 1797 as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve of the Connecticut Land Company and officially established on April 7, 1823. In 1830 the boundaries and the interior of this township were measured again by Hezekiah Dunham. The house that he built at the time can still be visited today. On March 15, 1837 Bedford became an independent parish, followed in 1915 by Maple Heights . Bedford Heights remained in the township.
It was not until September 1950 that 91 citizens signed a petition that would allow Bedford Heights to be established as a community. However, this request was narrowly rejected by the Bedford Township Civic League with 239 votes to 231. On February 20, 1951, another vote was held, which finally approved the establishment of Bedford Heights parish with 244 to 220 votes. Robert Williford became the first mayor. There was later another motion to merge the parish of Bedford Heights with the city of Bedford, but this was rejected by a large majority. After Oakwood and Walton Hills had also become independent, the township administration was dissolved.
In 1952, Bedford Heights Informer became the community's first local newspaper. In 1960 a new statute came into force for the municipality, which should prepare the city elevation. On January 4, 1961, Bedford Heights received city status.
