history

Bedford was established in 1837 as the first independent parish in Bedford Township . Bedford Township was surveyed in 1797 as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve by the Connecticut Land Company . The Bedford area offered the settlers farmland and wood abundance, as well as the hydropower of Tinkers Creek .

The first operation in Bedford Township was a company founded in 1816 by Benjamin Franklin Fitch to manufacture wooden chairs. Under his colleague and future son-in-law William O. Taylor, it became known as The Taylor Chair Company . This furniture company still exists today. After a fire in 1850, it moved from its original location in what is now Maple Heights to the urban area of Bedford and used the hydropower of Tinkers Creek. In 1885, another chair manufacturing company, The Marble & Shattuck Chair Company , was founded in the city .

In the 1930s, Bedford was promoted to town, along with other neighboring parishes such as Garfield Heights and Maple Heights. These communities in the affluent suburbs of Cleveland had benefited from the huge influx of immigrants. Electric trams connected them to Cleveland, but had been able to take advantage of the quieter and more rural area. Therefore they resisted attempts at incorporation and preferred to keep their own structures.

education

Bedford, together with Bedford Heights , Oakwood and Walton Hills, forms the Bedford School District. These include Bedford High, Central Primary School, Glendale Primary School, Columbus Intermediate School, Carylwood Intermediate School, Heskett Middle School, and Bedford High. The Columbus Intermediate School and the Heskett Middle School are in Bedford Heights, while the other schools are in the urban area of Bedford.
