Behemoth - Monsters from the Deep (Original title: Behemoth ) is an American - Canadian horror film from 2011.

action

In the small town of Ascension, earthquake events are increasing. They call two agents on the scene, who are investigating Mt. Lincoln, which is next to the city, in an apparently secret mission. They died under mysterious circumstances and left a suitcase on the mountain. Forest worker Thomas Walsh is also at Mt. Lincoln with his staff when one of his colleagues is hit by a branch. When he lies down on the floor, apparently only slightly injured, he dies within a few minutes. Geologist Emily also comes to Mt. Lincoln because of the earthquake. Thomas' sister Grace, who also lives in Ascension with her father William, goes on a camping trip with her boyfriend against the advice of her brother, while William, apparently not entirely in control of his senses, talks about a being that will destroy humanity.

The earthquakes keep increasing. Emily discovers dangerous amounts of carbon dioxide are flowing out of the mountain. Thomas, meanwhile, is hired by Agent Jack Murray to retrieve the other two agents' suitcases. When Grace and her boyfriend pitch their tent, they are suddenly watched by a huge eye through a hole in the rock wall, and immediately afterwards they are attacked by a monstrous tentacle. Jack reveals to Thomas that under Mt. Lincoln lives a huge monster called Behemoth, which with its tentacles spans the entire earth and will destroy humanity. The only weapon against the monster is in the agents' suitcase.

The earthquakes keep getting stronger and destroy large parts of the city, until Behemoth finally erupts from Mt. Lincoln. Thomas, who has since found the box, manages to destroy the monster with the weapon and with the help of Emily and Grace.

reception

The editorial team of Kino.de describes Behemoth as “effective, but without surprises, set in a foggy back forest scene, low-budget doomsday thriller”, about which “nothing is new or special”, but which should please fans of trash films. The website schongetestet.de rates Behemoth as "unfortunately a bit too conservative and taking itself too seriously", which primarily affects the entertainment factor of the film, and that "despite a basically promising and cool animated monster". Christoph Uitz from moviebreak.de praises the basic idea of Behemoth , but criticizes the film as a whole as "a work that is quickly wound down, without special story tricks or lines of dialogue that remain in the memory."

production

The shooting of Behemoth - Monsters from the Deep took place in Squamish , a city in the province of British Columbia in western Canada. The budget for the film was about $ 1.3 million.

Actor William B. Davis gained international fame for his portrayal of the "Cancer Candidate" in the US television series The X-Files - The FBI's Scary Cases .
