The Beifang QCJ7050 (initially: Qinchuan SX720 ) is a small car from the Chinese vehicle manufacturer Xian Qinhuan Automobile of the Beifang brand , which was produced in small numbers in the mid-1980s.

History of origin

Xian Qinhuan Automobile, based in the central Chinese city of Xi'an , was primarily a repair shop. He was part of the state armaments company Běifāng Gōngyè (北方 工業, English name: China North Industries Corporation , short: Norinco ), whose product range ranged from trucks to chemical products to weapons. The development of the car marked the beginning of a phase of upheaval in the Chinese automotive industry. After the national vehicle market had been dominated by the Shanghai SH760 in the 1960s and 1970s , numerous companies began to develop and offer their own vehicles in the mid-1980s. Norinco took up this development with the bycatch QCJ7050. It is one of the first automobiles to be made during this period.

The car was significantly smaller than the Shanghai. It was initially named Qinchuan SX720, but was then renamed to bycatch QCJ7050. The new model name was intended to document the manufacturer's affiliation with the armaments group Běifāng (Norico) and to promote sales.

The bycatch QCJ7050 appeared as a prototype in 1986. The production of the series model, which hardly deviated from the prototype, lasted from 1987 to 1988. The car could not establish itself. In three years only about 500 copies were made. Most of them were used as taxis in Xi'an for several years.

Model description

Bycatch QCJ7050 was a two-door, four-seat vehicle with a hatchback . The body was designed very angular. At the rear, the car had a small trunk lid that closed the rear window. There were sliding windows at the rear. The bycatch QCJ7050 was powered by a two-cylinder Daihatsu engine that developed 28 hp (20 kW). The power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a manual four-speed gearbox. At the rear, the vehicle had a rigid axle that was suspended from leaf springs. The few available photographs show that the small wheels were not centered in the wheel cutouts, but were offset towards the center of the car. The taillights came from the Daihatsu Charade .
