The Beinn a 'Chreachain is a 1081 meter high mountain in Scotland . Its Gaelic name means roughly shell- shaped mountain or rocky mountain . The mountain is the highest of the four east of Bridge of Orchy lying Munros between Loch Lyon and Rannoch Moor form a small mountain group.
Similar to Beinn Dorain , which also belongs to the Bridge of Orchy Hills group and is much better known , Beinn a 'Chreachain has a conical summit structure, but not so prominently rising from the valley. On the north side, the mountain falls with steep rock faces into the Coire an Lochain and encloses the small lake Lochan a Chreachain in this cirque in a semicircle . Below is the Black Wood of Rannoch, a remnant of the pine forest that used to cover large parts of Scotland . To the south the mountain drops steeply and rocky, only to the southwest it runs out a little flatter. To the west, the neighboring Beinn Achaladair joins over a longer ridge . In the northeast ridge is a 981 meter high nameless pre-summit.
Most mountain hikers climb the Beinn a 'Chreachain from the west. From Achaladair Farm , a little off the A82 north of Bridge of Orchy, the approach in the valley of the Water of Tulla leads parallel to the West Highland Line to the Coire an Lochain , through which the ascent to the northeast ridge and over this leads to the summit. There is also a transition to Beinn Achaladair via the ridge that connects the two Munros .
