history

The company was founded in 1880 by Leo Leander Bekaert in the West Flemish municipality of Zwevegem . Under the leadership of Léon-Antoine Bekaert, who took over from Leo Leander Bekaert, the company grew rapidly and expanded abroad. Before the Second World War , Bekaert became President of the National General Christian Employers' Association (LACW), where he defended the interests of Catholic patronage. After the war he became president of the FBE. He also had contacts with the royal house and the national bank. However, his political activities did not go beyond the office of mayor of Zwevegem. After his death in 1961, his son-in-law Marc Verhaeghe was appointed President of the Bekaert Group. In 2000, Baron Paul Buysse was elected to the Board of Directors for the first time as a non-family member . He appointed Julien De Wilde as CEO and Bert De Graeve as Chief Finance & Administration Officer.

In 2015 Bekaert took over the Pirelli steel wire activities and has been supplying Pirelli with the wire that is important for tires ever since . With the acquisition , Bekaert received production facilities in Italy , Figline Valdarno , Slatina in Romania and Izmit ( Turkey ). This was the largest acquisition in Bekaert's history and added around 300 million euros to group sales per year.
