history

The city walls of Figline Valdarno

The story of Figline Valdarno begins in the 11th century with the mention of the Castello di Fegghine , which was on a hill above the river. The area around the hill was already inhabited by the Etruscans . After the castle was destroyed, the associated lower town (Borgo), which was built around the 12th century and served as a marketplace, was expanded by the Fiorentines in the 1250s. In the 14th century the city wall with the gates Porta Aretina , Porta Fiorentina , Porta San Francesco and Porta Senese (now walled up) was built.

Figline Valdarno has seen a steady increase in population since 1861. While the population was just under ten thousand in 1861, it grew continuously to over 16,000 in 2011. On January 1, 2014, Figline Valdarno founded the new municipality of Figline e Incisa Valdarno with the neighboring town of Incisa in Val d'Arno.
