History and technology

Got it with a wooden frame, 3.5 HP from 1922

1922 founded Hugo Ruppe the Berlin Kleinmotoren Aktiengesellschaft (Bekamo) in Berlin, Bremen Road 148. There he developed a nose piston - two-stroke engine with charge pump , which was controlled via an annular channel to the crankcase. The so-called “auxiliary pump”, as a piston charging pump, was located opposite the working piston in the crankcase. Of the working pistons operating in opposite directions charging piston enlarged the suction volume of the crankcase. The fuel-air mixture was ignited by a magneto. The small motorcycle, weighing just 52 kg, had an engine with a displacement of 129 cm³ (bore 50 mm, stroke 66 mm), which produced a maximum output of 3.5  hp . The power was transmitted to the rear wheel via a cork-lined cone clutch and a two-speed gearbox with a V-belt. The unconventional motorcycle frame was made of ash wood , which was covered with sheet metal reinforcement on both sides. The engine was leaning forward in a subframe below the box frame. Later models - at the express customer request - were delivered with a classic tubular steel frame. A version with 146 cm³ displacement (53 mm bore) is said to have delivered an output of 6 hp. In 1925 the company had to stop production in Berlin due to inflation.

In addition, between 1924 and 1926, Bekamo manufactured three-wheel utility vehicles with a single front wheel.

In 1925 Hugo Ruppe founded the company Kaehlert und Ruppe in Rumburg . Up until 1929, Bekamo two-stroke engines were manufactured there, which were also used as built-in engines by the Berlin manufacturer Brand .

Motorcycle racing

In the pioneering days of German motorcycle racing , Bekamo was able to attract attention with several victories in the small classes. For example, in 1923 Josef Thevis won the 150cc race in Swinoujscie , Max Hucke in the AVUS race in Berlin (150 cm³ and 200 cm³) and the Schleizer triangle race (350 cm³), and in 1924 Franz Islinger won the reliability run through the Odenwald .
