Belbello da Pavia
Belbello da Pavia , also Luchino Belbello da Pavia (* unknown in Pavia ; † approx. 1509 ), was an Italian miniaturist and painter who was active between 1430 and 1470.
biography
Belbello's career and personality remained unknown until the early 20th century. Eventually, two art scholars, first Pietro Toesca and then Guglielmo Pacchioni, identified him by attributing works to him through stylistic research.
He was one of the artists in the miniaturists' studio in Pavia and worked for the Visconti , the Gonzaga and other Italian and European courts.
His artistic tendencies were based on the Lombard currents of Giovannino de 'Grassi and Michelino da Besozzo, as well as on the French miniature.
One of his first works was the second part of the Officiolo Visconti , in which Belbello had to continue the work begun and abandoned by Giovannino de 'Grassi and enrich it with an unusual colorful imagination.
He then prepared the breviary and the Estense Bible (1434) on behalf of Maria von Savoyen (1432) , which have an original expression and a rather moving narrative.
The main works of his artistry, however, were the graduals commissioned by Cardinal Bessarione and the Roman Missal for the cathedral of Mantua, in which the forms with the effects reminiscent of the baroque tendencies assume a greater fullness.
He produced illuminated manuscripts for the most important clients in Northern Italy in an original style that was inspired by the grotesque and expressive style of international Gothic.
In the miniatures of the Bible by Niccolò d'Este (1431–1434) he painted imposing and solid figures, but with fluid and deformed lines, excessive gestures and bright and changing colors. Belbello stayed true to this expression throughout his long career until about 1470.
