Treasury

The treasure of the Duomo of Mantua and the Palatina di Santa Barbara basilica is a compact and cohesive inventory of goldsmith work that has largely remained intact. They manage at least to give an idea of the splendor of the Gonzagas, especially in the mid- Renaissance , the height of the dynasty's political and economic fortune. Among the objects shown here:

  • Ivory boxes (11th-12th centuries) Islamic work;
  • Madonna and Child (14th century), in gilded silver from a French manufacture;
  • one osculatorium from 1513 another from 1562
  • the Missal of Barbara von Brandenburg , 1442 commissioned by Gianlucido Gonzaga to the Lombard miniaturist Belbello da Pavia and completed by Girolamo da Cremona with the support of Taddeo Crivelli in 1556.
  • the closure of a cope with the monogram of Christ (1561–1562), in gold and precious stones, a gift from the Dukes of Bavaria to Vincenzo Gonzaga;
  • the Reliquary of the True Cross or Stauroteca di Santa Barbara (1573), a Lombard workshop, was commissioned by Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga for the Basilica Palatina di Santa Barbara to preserve some fragments of the True Cross from his mother Margherita Paleologa;
  • the reliquary of Saint Barbara (16th century) from a Venetian workshop;
  • the Reliquary of the Precious Blood (1573) commissioned by Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga;
  • the reliquary of St. Giovanni Bono (late 16th century);
  • the reliquary of Saint Adriano (door 1605 ), in ebony, turtle, silver and ivory;
  • Crosses that range from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.

Coins

The museum has a numismatic area displaying around sixty Roman coins, a selection from Pietro Zappa's collection, whose donation consists of 400 pieces. Most of the Roman coins on display are from the Roman Republic , but there are also examples from the Hellenistic and Imperial periods .

weapons

After the historic victory in the fight against the French at Fornovo in 1495, the commanders and armaments experts of the militia of Gianfrancesco Gonzaga donated their armor as an ex voto to the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie in Curtatone, near Mantua. The restored and restored armor has proven to be of remarkable quality, made by Milanese and Brescian gunsmiths, including the Missaglia workshop. They form a unique whole that is not only important for the history of weapons, but also for the specific field of handicrafts.

Tapestries

There are three Flemish tapestries from the early 16th century woven in Bruges and the complete series of Duomo tapestries woven in Paris between 1594 and 1598 on behalf of Francesco Gonzaga, Bishop of Mantua, and to Pope Clement VIII. Were sent to Paris as apostolic nuncio .

Ceramics

The most recent extension was inaugurated on October 1, 2016 and was the collection of the ceramics collected by the Mantuan painters Domenico and Vindizio Nodari Pesenti in the 20th century. About seventy pieces are exhibited that date from the Renaissance and were also used in everyday life.
