The Beles is a river in the highlands of Ethiopia .

It begins at the confluence of two source rivers, only a few kilometers long, about 15 km west of Lake Tana at an altitude of about 2100 m above sea ​​level. d. M. and winds in a south-westerly direction through the mountains of Amhara and Benishangul-Gumuz until it flows into the Blue Nile about 55 km from the Sudanese border at an altitude of 535 m .

Its catchment area covers 14,200 km². Since the Tana Beles hydropower plant went into operation , the Beles has received water from Lake Tana , which is to be used in a number of irrigation projects below the power plant. For this purpose a number of weirs and the smaller dam wall were built in 1243, which according to their location at 1243 m above sea level. d. M. ( 11 ° 39 ′ 42.7 ″  N , 36 ° 41 ′ 11.8 ″  E ).

The confluence of the Beles into the Blue Nile is located around 40 km above the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance dam , which is currently under construction , in whose power plant the water of the Beles will also be used in the future.
