Tana Beles is a newly built run-of-river power plant in Ethiopia , with which water from Lake Tana is used to generate electricity and to irrigate the Belestal .

Cavern power plant

The cavern power plant consists of an inlet structure near the village of Kunzila at 1784 m above sea level. d. M. Tana Lake ( 11 ° 52 ′ 52 ″  N , 37 ° 0 ′ 40.5 ″  E ), a 12 km long pressure tunnel with an inner diameter of 7.2 m, a 270 m deep vertical pressure shaft to the cavern power house with 4 Francis turbines and Generators ( 11 ° 49 ′ 5 ″  N , 36 ° 55 ′ 24 ″  E ), the suction pipes connected to the turbines and finally a 7.2 km long outlet tunnel to the outlet structure in the Beles River ( 11 ° 46 ′ 40 ″  N , 36 ° 52 ′ 1.5 ″  E ). Only the inlet and outlet structures as well as the ventilation shaft and the entrances to the cavern, the open-air switchgear and various office and residential buildings are visible above ground .

The power plant is designed for a water volume of 160 m³ / s. The fall height is approx. 301 m.

Dam 1243

The water will also be used to irrigate 140,000 hectares of agricultural land in the Belestal. For this purpose, a number of weirs and the smaller dam wall were built in 1243 , which according to its location at 1243 m above sea level. d. M. ( 11 ° 39 ′ 42.6 ″  N , 36 ° 41 ′ 17 ″  E ).

history

The construction company was the Italian Salini Costruttori SPA, as was the case for the construction of Gilgel Gibe III on the Omo . The company commissioned with the planning and execution of the overall project commissioned Studio Pietrangeli with the planning of the power plant and Andritz Hydro with the delivery and installation of the turbines and all of the electrical equipment. The construction work lasted from 2006 to 2010.

The hydropower plant went into operation in May 2010 with the first of four turbines of 115 MW each. The construction costs amounted to 7.1 billion Birr or 70 million euros .

Two more hydropower plants were inaugurated in Ethiopia in the same year: Tekeze (400 MW) and Gilgel Gibe II (320 MW).
