history
In 1799 , Francis (Jacques) Guitard, originally from France , settled in the area. Other French immigrants followed and named the place in 1824 because of the scenic beauty of the beaches Belledune , which means "beautiful sand dunes". After a devastating wildfire in the regions further south around Chatham , many Irish and Scottish settlers moved from the affected areas to Belledune. The main livelihoods of the inhabitants in the mid- 19th century were the fishing, agriculture and timber industries. In 1966 a zinc smelter went into operation. New Brunswick Province's state-owned utility , NB Power , commissioned a coal-fired power plant, Belledune Generating Station, in 1993 . The power station was operated at times with local coal from Minto . Since Belledune also has a port, cheaper coal is increasingly being imported from the USA or South America .
