Belote

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Belote , or rather La Belote , is the name of a well-known and popular French card game . It is a link between the Klaverjass played in the Netherlands and the Swiss Jass . It is the youngest of these three games.

About history

Belote was created in France at the beginning of the 20th century ; a number of games in other European countries are very similar to the card game earlier, also known as "Belotte", including Jass from Switzerland , clips from Germany and Klaverjassen from the Netherlands . Together with the tarot, Belote is one of the most popular card games in France and Bulgaria.

Belote is possibly derived from the name of F. Belot, who is said to have perfected this game of Dutch origin. Another theory attributes it to the expression bel atout ( nice trump ).

Game flow

Beginning of the game

First, each player is dealt five cards (a round of three and then two cards for a round). Then the top card of the remaining pile is turned over. One after the other the players have to decide whether to accept this face up card; if someone does so, he becomes the captain ( preneur ) and the suit of the accepted card becomes trump ( atout ). The remaining cards are then issued, one less to the taker. If all players reject the card, they are allowed to determine in a second round whether they want to be the captain and, if so, which color should be trump. If no captain emerges here either ( nulle donne ), a new game round is started.

Progress of the game

Messages in the game

If a player has three cards of the same suit in a row (7, 8, 9 - 8, 9, 10 - 9, 10, B - 10, B, Q - B, Q, K - Q, K, A), he can do one Report third . If a player has four cards of one color in a row (7, 8, 9, 10 - 8, 9, 10, B - 9, 10, B, D - ...), he can have a fifty or so-called five goat Report. If there are five cards in a row (7, 8, 9, 10, B - 8, 9, 10, B, Q - 9, 10, B, Q, K - 10, B, Q, K, A) the person concerned reports Player a hundred .

There are also carrés :

  • 4 × jack = 200 points
  • 4 × 9 = 150 points
  • 4 × 10 = 100 points
  • 4 × queen = 100 points
  • 4 × king = 100 points
  • 4 × ace = 100 points
  • 4 × 8 = nothing
  • 4 × 7 = nothing

One of the players plays a card. Then the other players have to play a card of the same suit in the usual manner. If there is none, a trump card must be played (if available) or any card if there is no trump card.

If a trump has been played, a higher trump must always be played. The exception to this is that if the pair of players got the trick, a low card can also be played, if one is available. So there is a compulsory trump in all suits and a compulsory trick in the trump suit.

The player who has both king and queen of trumps owned can to cast the first of these two cards belote announce, in the second rebelote .

The four cards played go to whoever placed the highest card.

The next round begins: the player who took the last trick plays one card, then the others follow, and so on. This is repeated until all cards have been played.

Point accounting

According to the table above, all points are added up at the end of a round .

In some circumstances, the parties receive additional points:

  • The last trick scores 10 points for the party that won it ( dix de der *).
  • If a party has taken all the tricks , there is a bonus of 100 points ( capot ), but then not the 10 points for the last trick.
  • The reporting of the trump pair consisting of king and queen gives the respective party 20 points ( belote-rebelote ).

(* = A play on words in French, roughly equivalent to Letz's ten .)

Evaluation of the points achieved

Up to this point, points have accumulated on both accounts, but these are only counted under certain circumstances, in other cases one of the parties is left empty-handed. A distinction must be made between the following cases:

  • The captain's party has scored more points than the opposing party ( le preneur FAIT son contrat ): The points of both parties are counted on the respective account.
  • The captain's side has scored fewer points than the opposing side ( le preneur est DEDANS ): The opposing side does not only count its own points; rather, there are also the points of the captain's party.
  • Both parties have the same number of points ( le preneur est mis en LITIGE ): In the case of the opposing party, their own points are counted; the points of the captain's party are "frozen" and counted in the next round by the winner of the round.

The two schools of Belote

The game was presented here as it is played in families. If a tournament is played, however, all reporting options are omitted, with the exception of the trump pair. It is obvious that the "luck" factor should be reduced in the form of the tournament.
