Reuben John "Ben" Marden (born February 10, 1927 in Fulham , † February 1, 2000 in Chelmsford ) was an English football player . The left winger played actively for Arsenal FC and Watford FC in the 1950s . He was part of the Arsenal team that won the English Championship in 1953 , but rarely got beyond the status of a supplementary player.
Athletic career
Marden was mostly located as a winger on the left and joined the first division club Arsenal in February 1950 from Chelmsford City . He was with the club for a good five years and during this time, in addition to numerous appearances in the reserve team, he made a total of 42 league appearances in which he scored eleven goals. He had made his debut in the first team on March 3, 1951 , a good year after his arrival on the occasion of the game at Manchester United (1: 3) and then played ten more games in the 1950/51 season, mostly as a replacement for the injured Don Roper . In the end, the reigning English cup winner finished fifth in the league .
In the team of coach Tom Whittaker Marden did not get beyond the role of a supplementary player. When Arsenal won the English championship in the 1952/53 season, he played eight games that were insufficient to receive an official championship medal. Nevertheless, he had contributed four goals to the success and was involved in two notable games that year, a 5-1 away win on November 15, 1952 at Liverpool FC and on the final day of the decisive duel against Burnley FC (3-2). He contributed two goals to the success against Liverpool, the remaining three went to Cliff Holton's account . A good two years later Marden left the club in the direction of Watford FC , which was then playing in the third- tier Third Division South .
Marden spent two years in Watford until the summer of 1957. With significantly higher game shares than at his previous station, he completed 41 league encounters (only one less than at Arsenal in more than five years). He scored exactly eleven goals again. Little is known about his further sporting career outside of professional football. In addition to an engagement for Bedford Town as a player, he is said to have worked in Romford as a coach. He died in early February 2000 at the age of 72.
