Benedict Roezl , also Benedikt or Benito , (born August 13, 1823 in Horomeritz near Prague, † October 14, 1884 in Prague ) was a k. k. Austrian- Bohemian botanist and traveler. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Roezl ".

Life

Benedict Roezl was born in Horomeritz on August 13, 1823. At the age of 13 he began training in Count Thun's gardens in Tetschen (now Děčín). After his training he visited and worked in many gardens in Europe.

In 1854 he made his first trip to Mexico . In 1867 Roezl developed a machine for cleaning hemp and ramie fibers. During a demonstration in Havana , Cuba in 1868, he lost his left hand which got caught in the machine. It was replaced by a prosthesis in the form of a metal hook.

He then began extensive research trips across America, during which he collected over 100,000 herbarium specimens and discovered over 800 new species. He also reintroduced many of the plants brought back from there, especially orchids . Roezl spent the last years of his life in Prague, where he died on October 14, 1884.

Dedication names

In 1918, Rudolf Schlechter named the orchid genus Roezliella after Benedict Roezl. The plant genus Roezlia Roezl from the asparagus family (Asparagaceae) is named after him. In addition, many plant species were named in his honor, including the following four orchid species

The rose variety Rosa 'Benedikt Roezl', a light pink flowering Rugosa hybrid bred by Vincenz Berger (1883–1974) in 1925, is named after him.
