Benigno Repeki Fitial (born November 27, 1945 in Saipan ) is an American politician . From 2006 to 2013 he was governor of the Northern Mariana Islands .

Career

Benigno Fitial attended Mt. Carmel High School on Saipan Island until 1964 . He then studied at the University of Guam . Before his political career he worked in various professions. Among other things, he was head of the newsroom at a radio station and accountant in the public sector. He has also worked in banking, insurance, and other fields. Among other things, he ran the company Tan Holdings Corporation , which manufactured clothing. Politically, he was initially a member of the Republicans . In 2001 he left that party and founded the Covenant Party . In 2011 he returned to the Republican Party.

In 2001 Fitial ran unsuccessfully for the office of governor of the Northern Mariana Islands. Two years later he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the territory of which he became president. In 2005 he was elected as the new governor of his homeland to succeed Juan Babauta . He took up this position on January 9, 2006. After being re-elected, he was able to exercise it until his resignation on February 20, 2013. Shortly before, a successful impeachment against Fitial had taken place in the House of Representatives , in which he was accused of abuse of office and corruption. With his resignation, he anticipated the hearing by the Senate of the Northern Mariana Islands , which would have been immediately ousted if the outcome had also been positive. The lieutenant governor appointed by him Eloy Inos succeeded him.
