Juan Nekai Babauta (born September 7, 1953 in Saipan ) is an American politician . Between 2002 and 2006 he was governor of the Northern Mariana Islands .

Career

Juan Babauta attended elementary school in his home country. He then graduated from Enosburgh Falls High School in Vermont until 1972 . He lived there for three years with a host family on a dairy farm. He then studied during the summer semester until 1976 at Johnson State College in Johnson . He studied American history and political science at Eastern New Mexico University . He completed his education with a degree in health care from the University of Cincinnati .

After returning to his homeland, Babauta worked in the field of health care ( Health Planner ). Between 1979 and 1986 he was Executive Director of this agency. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1986 and 1990 he sat in the Senate of the Northern Mariana Islands . At times he was chairman of the finance committee and leader of the Republican parliamentary group. He also chaired the Committee on Health, Education and Welfare and the Committee on Rules and Procedures . Between 1990 and 2002 he was Resident Representative for the Northern Mariana Islands in the federal capital Washington, DC

In 2001 Juan Babauta was elected governor of his homeland to succeed Pedro Tenorio . He held this office between January 14, 2002 and January 9, 2006. In 2005, he was not confirmed. Four years later he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the 2009 gubernatorial elections. Between 2007 and 2009 he edited Homeland Magazine . In 2010 he ran for the office of non-voting Congress delegate, but he was defeated by Gregorio Sablan .
