Froilan Tenorio

Froilan Cruz Tenorio (born September 9, 1939 in the Northern Mariana Islands , † May 4, 2020 in Fort Worth , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1994 and 1998 he was governor of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Career

Froilan Tenorio attended the Territorial College of Guam until 1962 . He was then trained to 1967 at Marquette University in Wisconsin as a civil engineer. He then worked in the building department of the city of Los Angeles in California . In 1972 he was hired by the Micronesean Construction Company . Two years later he founded his own construction company, Tenorio Construction Co. At the same time, he began a political career. Between 1979 and 1984 he was a member of the Senate of his territory. From 1984 to 1990 he represented his home in the American capital ( Resident Representative to the United States). In 1988 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of governor there. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party or its offshoot in the Northern Mariana Islands. He later moved to the local Covenant Party .

In the gubernatorial elections of 1993 Tenorio was elected to succeed Lorenzo I. De Leon Guerrero as the new governor of the Northern Mariana Islands. He held this office between January 10, 1994 and January 12, 1998. This led to differences with the Republican- controlled state legislature. In 1997 he was not re-elected. Tenorio also had ties with Jack Abramoff and was embroiled in one of his scandals.

In 2001 and 2005 he applied unsuccessfully to return to the office of governor. In 2009 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Northern Mariana Islands , where he became President of the House.
