Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan (born January 19, 1955 in Saipan , Northern Mariana Islands ) is an American politician . Since 2009 he has represented the Northern Mariana Islands as a delegate in the United States House of Representatives .

Career

Gregorio Sablan attended schools and high schools in his homeland. He then studied at the University of Guam , the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa . Between 1981 and 1986 he served in the United States Army . In the late 1980s he worked for the US Senator Daniel Inouye from Hawaii . Between 1982 and 1986 he sat in the Chamber of Deputies of the Northern Mariana Islands . In the following years he was an advisor to the territorial governors Pedro Tenorio and Froilan Tenorio .

In 2008, the Northern Mariana Islands were granted an official non-voting congressional delegate. Until then there was only one representative who carried the title Resident Representative ; Sablan had exercised this function until then. In the subsequent elections on November 4, 2008, he was elected as an independent candidate for his new office. On January 3, 2009, he took up his seat in Congress in Washington, DC . On February 23 of the same year he became a member of the Democratic Party . As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2018, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2021. He is or was a member of the Agriculture Committee , the Committee on Natural Resources and a total of four sub-committees. He is also a member of seven Congressional Caucuses .
